    Review- 2006 Mirassou Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine, which can be found in all corners of any grocery store it seems and is a ho-hum symphony of complacency and disappointment. Cheap, basic and just lacking any character. I even attempted to decant overnight with no tangible results in the chemistry of this sleeping giant. Mirassou has to be as common as Yellow Tail in some places and I find it as average if not more appallingly so. Black cherries, mild notes of dark chocolate and a rancid licorice aftertaste make this not worth the price tag. If you buy it, drink it with a meal to help mask the taste that will leave you completely uninspired to drink any more of it.

Review- Gnarly Head Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

So have you ever wondered what a bottle of wine would taste like if instead of oak barrels, they used the wood of a cedar tree? This wine is it! I felt like I was drinking an actual cedar tree. I’m down with cedar, especially with this wine as it was $8.99 @ Total Wine & More. Also had mocha, black cherries and a pleasantly long finish that lingered for the length of a good commercial break on tv. I also got hints of spicy pepperoni, like you sometimes find on pizza which was rather intriguing and unexpected. For the price, this common bottle of wine really surprised me as I was thinking when I was buying it “eh, even if it’s bad it’s cheaper than some other offerings.” So if you are looking for a good gameday wine that goes well with snacks and cheese (you Packer fans out there) this wine is for you!

    Review- Shoofly Aussie Salute 2006

This wine is a 70/25/5 blend of Shiraz/Grenache/Viognier and was purchased for $12 @ BevMo. Definitely let this guy breathe for several hours, please, please, please! If you don’t you may have the scare that I had on the palate which were a combination of a warm hair salon and, well, you remember Grandma’s perfume when you were growing up and it made you wish for a nose bleed? Yeah, it’s that if you drink it straight away without decanting or just letting sit on the counter open for a while. Once given time to transform it becomes an honorable effort of dark plum, blackberry, mud, very earthy. I don’t like the addition, even the slightness of it, of Viognier. I think it is like the nerdy kid who goes to the wine tasting event and takes the fun right out of the room with his take on things. For $12 I am not likely to purchase again because of the time you have to give this wine to breathe and the overall experience in my mouth. Leave the white stuff out of my mouth when I desire blood red wine. If I wanted a white wine, I’ll go get a Riesling or Torrentes, but this one just tries too hard to be something it shouldn’t be.
